Presentation: Following in Deming's Footsteps to Improve Software Quality

Tuesday, February 23, 2016, 3:30 - 4:00 PM CET, Hall 4A
John Paliotta, CTO, Vector Software

W. Edwards Deming revolutionized the manufacturing industry by teaching companies how to produce higher quality products at the lowest cost possible. Deming suggested retooling the manufacturing process to ensure that quality was measured at each phase of the manufacturing process. He believed that creating a high-quality product at the outset saved money and won customers, and his concepts were supported by statistical data.

The same principles that Deming applied to the manufacturing industry need to be applied to the software industry. Organizations searching for improved quality must rethink the role of testing in the development cycle, especially in terms of total lifecycle cost not time to release 1.0.

Quality improvement is not a single activity that magically transforms an application but rather a process of incremental improvement. Deming's philosophies did not transform manufacturing quality in the automotive industry overnight; the process Deming implemented at Ford took three years to provide a measurable return.

A reasonable plan companies can implement to improve software quality should have the following goals:

  • Measure Testing Completeness
  • Reduce Code Complexity
  • Share Tests Across Teams
  • Make Testing Automated and Continuous

John's presentation will focus on how companies can implement a quality improvement process within their organizations that will result in lower life cycle costs, better quality products, and faster releases.
