Code Coverage and Reliability in Embedded Software

I recently presented a paper titled “Using Code Coverage to Improve the Reliability of Embedded Software” at an IEEE Symposium Workshop on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE) in San Jose. Attendees included people involved with commercial networking applications, medical device products, and military and aerospace. It was interesting that a high percentage use coverage tools but very few have requirements to get to 100% code coverage. Most companies use the coverage tools during system testing but hardly any combine coverage from system test with unit test to achieve 100% coverage. I explained that our FAA customers say that they get... Continue reading »

Customer Support, Dr. House Style

One of my favorite shows on TV is House, with Hugh Laurie playing the irascible Dr. Gregory House, diagnostician extraordinaire. One of House's favorite lines is "Everybody lies". Asia gets ready for ISO 26262

On my way back to Singapore, I stopped for several days in China, visiting Automotive organizations with our local reseller Hirain Technologies. I just finished the work on two additional unit testing integrations, both based on the Code Warrior development environment, one for MPC and the other for HC12.

All had their particular set of challenges - a previously unsupported debugger, the absence of any ports besides BDM - but the tool is pretty flexible, and that makes all the difference in the world. Chinese companies are not the only ones in Automotive upgrading their software testing infrastructure.
