Ada: “I’m not dead yet.”

With deference to Monty Python for the title, it is becoming apparent to me that there is an increased interest in Ada.

A great example of this is a discussion that I had with a major avionics customer during a visit last week. This customer is building a new avionics “box” and they have decided to use Ada for the majority of the application code. This was surprising to me since although we do see new Ada development in Europe, we seldom see new Ada development in the US market. Our customer’s reasons for choosing Ada were very interesting to me. A paraphrase of his answer:

We initially switched from Ada to C/C++ because it was hard to find Ada programmers and most of the new grads we hired had C/C++ experience.

Now when we hire new grads, we find that they have been taught Java and C# in school, but don’t know C++ or Ada. Since we have to train them anyway, we have decided to train them to use Ada rather than C++.

This is a very interesting point of view. We’ll have to see if others take this same path.
