The commonwealth of Massachusetts is responsible for a disproportionate percentage of medical devices produced in the United States and sold overseas, according to a recent Boston.com report.
The report cited a soon-to-be-released study conducted by consulting firm Deloitte & Touche, which found that the medical device industry employs more workers in Massachusetts than any other American state, with the exception of California.
Furthermore, exports of Massachusetts-made medical devices have grown at a speed more than double that of the state’s total exports. According to the report, medical device exports from Massachusetts now account for 10 percent of all American medical equipment sold abroad.
The medical device field includes a wide range of products. Those produced in Massachusetts are, for the most part, sophisticated, high-end devices that include complex electronics, materials and embedded medical device software.
According to Deloitte, more than 24,000 workers were employed in the medical device industry in 2008, the most recent year for which data is available. Nationally, the industry employed approximately 392,000 people in the same year.
